This weeks drawing....people

Hello Lovelies ,
I can't tell you how much it means to me that so many of you are happy to join me on this detour from my usual craft. It's taken me by surprise too.

So what am I attempting at the moment.......yikes ....people.

 I like to see people in pictures as it adds interest , but they are a difficult subject to do really well.
I know my drawing is pretty unaccomplished , but simple people , you know sort of cartoonish...is that what I mean ? ....I could have a go at those.........maybe.


This is not my work......but Mum's wonderful painting, so full of life and well observed people.

The inspiration for my picture came from an activity my eldest enjoys, and also the work of THIS talented artist I discovered last week.

Each week we head off, just the two of us , into the city , to the ice rink. It's always nice to get a bit of one to one time with any of my boys, so I enjoy our chats in the car , catching up with each others news.
Once we are there and he's got his skates on and gone off for his lesson I usually sit and crochet or read.

That was my plan last week, but instead I pulled out a note book and pen and did a little sketch of what I could see around me. Really noticing the environment that is so full of life and colour and very familiar to me nowadays.


Then at home I started to draw....first in pencil, then in really fine pen.....this one doesn't erase.
 Oh it was hard drawing the people.....I haven't tried to do that since I was at school ( a LONG time ago ) but after much pondering and rubbing out I was reasonably happy with the results.

 Here is the picture before colouring...........


As you can see it's got a lot going on , but that is what it's like at the ice rink and I wanted to capture a moment in time almost. I wanted it to be well observed and a record of something that I could not easily take a pretty photo of .



And ,well, I think it does that.........

There are many small details I observed .........






What do I think of it ? Well.....I think it shows how little drawing experience I really have, much more than my last picture.



 But hey I'm still happy  that I had a go and recorded a part of  life with my rapidly growing boys .
Overall I think it's FUN . It was fun to do....and I hope it made you smile.

    I think it's charming, it captures the atmosphere at the rink. Love the figure stretching with his leg up behind him, very flexible!!! I would love to be able to draw. Rowen@Coastal Colours x

    Your picture is wonderful, I love it. The colours are gorgeous, and your attention to detail is amazing. I think we are our own worst critic, you should give yourself a pat on the back for such a wonderful achievement.

    Lucy I find your beautiful drawing, very naive, perhaps for the color I would have used the watercolor crayons, however, congratulations!

    That is fabulous!!! I think this picture is fantastic. The fact that this is an environment that you are so familiar too, and your son too, makes it even more interesting. I am sure he will treasure this drawing more and more the older he gets. As a grown up he will probably stage this in his favorite spot in his own home. Don't you think.
    This was so much fun. I really enjoyed it. It inspires me. I want to show this to my daughter who has started a sketch diary. Just to show her how she can create pictures from doodles. Lovely. Continue this journey. I am having a blast.

    It's really lovely. So full of life. Every time I see your drawings I want to have a go myself as it's been a long time. Little boys are stopping me though! I remember when I was doing my art A level going out one afternoon to do sketching in the city. My friend and I went down to the river and sat sketching some men that were fishing. So not easy doing people. I made a reasonable job of it then but I bet if I gave it a go now 24 years later the result would be terrible. I really love your Mums painting too. Obviously an artistic family. Fiona x

    I really love your drawings and the story we get. It is such a fun and busy drawing with so much happening and we get the idea of a very busy rink. You are so observant, all the different shapes and sizes, all the different actions. I am feeling envious as I have been longing to get 'playing' with my art but have had a very busy week.     I only discovered your blog yesterday and already have followed one of your crochet tutorials and made two crochet discs to make into a hand warmer. (I hasten to note it has taken me 15 years to learn to crochet, partly down to being left handed and also as initially had a super tight tension so could not get the loop off the hook). Although still very much a novice at least it looks like crochet now. Now I have also been reading your drawing posts and it has inspired me to get the colouring pencils out. I hated art at school and not paying attention is probably my biggest regret as learning a skill later in life is a lot harder. By the way I think your drawing and colouring is wonderful :-)

    I love your artwork, this picture really reminds me of the skating rink I take my children. It also brings to mind lots of the story books I've read with my children over the years, I enjoy the illustrations in the books often more than the story itself! Your picture can easily stand proud in amongst the published illustrators work and you should give yourself a pat on the back. (I do like your modesty too though as it shows you as a really nice person xx)

    You know - my sister used to go to skating lessons in the 1970s and I would tag along and watch. Your picture took me right back there - the atmosphere is spot on! xx

    I have been ADORING your drawings over the past month or so. My mother and aunt paint beautiful watercolors, my husband is excellent at portrait drawing, my sister is an art therapy student...but alas, I didn't get the "artist" gene - rather the crafter gene. But seeing all your lovely drawings have made me want to delve right into a new pack of colored pencils and ink pens. Thanks you for the beauty you have shared. I can see it so comes from your heart.

    your drawing is fab you don't give yourself enough credit,i could never draw like you do,if any of yours were for sale i would buy them :)
    have you looked at LS Lowery (match stick men etc)for ideas,all though yours are lovely and modern and the colours are great the skating is just as busy as i remember when i went with my daughter. again love the picture keep drawing.

    Fantastic! before scrolling down to the end and seeing all the images (in big) I was already enjoying the incredible details - the girls warming up, the girl just about to start or just finished a twirl and my favorite the guy who has just scored at table top ice hockey!!

    Actually Jacquie I think it takes a lot of talent to draw like that, it's beautiful. It really reminds me of a children's book illustration.

    Perhaps one day you could draw me a beachy/boaty drawing for TTB's room ... (that's me being cheeky!) xxx

    Have to agree with other posts you clearly have a future in childrens illistration. WHat a full and happy picture and so much colour. I have just made you Sail away project for the bathroom..yours is far superior but it does look bright a jolly. Also have you seen Attic 24 this week Owls and Bunnies. Have loved making the Owls and have just made a bunny ( Green dragonfly pattern)I love this creative community. Thank you for sharing.xx
