Does anybody remember the circles I teased you with at the end of this post ?
Well I was making a quick gift to take with me to Yorkshire.
As I said before , it wasn't a blanket or a bag , rather something purely decorative.
Would you like to see what they became ?
Here we are , a little Ta-dah moment ( my favourite )..........
Colourful , Happy Hearts :0)
I first came up with this pattern back in February 2011 , made one and hung it up, then never got round to doing any thing else about it.
Then ,when I knew I was going to meet up with Heather I decided I could make some to string together as bunting ( to look pretty in her babies nursery ).......it had never occurred to me to do that before. These are quite big when made up . I used Style craft double knitting yarn and a 4mm hook...........
Luckily I had jotted down the pattern and managed to pop it somewhere safe . I thought maybe some of you lovelies would like to try your hand at these so I'm going to share the pattern......sorry it's not a tutorial but I simply don't have the time to do one at the moment.Hope you understand .
The centre sunburst is not my pattern . There is an excellent photo tutorial for these HEREso pop over there first then come back here for the heart shaped part :0)
Got your three round circle ? Good .
Here is my pattern, written in my usual U.S. terms
Abbreviations are as follows :-
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
htc = half treble crochet
tc = treble crochet
Round 1
In any space around your circle ( Space 1 ), attach yarn and ch 1, 1 dc,ch 1. space 2 3tc, 2 ch, 3 tc, ch1
space 3 3 htc, ch 1.
space 4 3 dc, ch 1.
space 5 3 dc, ch 1.
space 6 3 dc, ch 1
space 7 1 htc, 2 tc, ch 2, 2 tc, 1 htc, ch 1.
space 8 3 dc, ch 1.
space 9 3 dc, ch 1.
space 10 3 dc, ch 1.
space 11 3 htc, ch 1.
space 12 3 tc, ch 2, 3 tc, ch 1.
space 1 1 dc, 1 sc.
Your heart should now look like this.........
You could stop at this point , but this was not properly heart shaped enough for me so I carried on with a second round to make the heart more pronounced.
Round 2
Note there is no need to join the end of round one to the beginning , simply ch 1 then work into the next space ( first space of round one )space 1 2 sc, 1 hdc, ch 1.
space 2 3 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, 1 htc, 1 tc, ch 1.
space 3 5 tc, ch 1.
space 4 1tc, 1 htc, 1 dc, ch 1.
space 5 3 dc, ch 1.
space 6 3 dc, ch 1.
space 7 3 dc, ch 1.
space 8 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch1
space 9 3 dc, ch 1.
space 10 3 dc, ch 1.
space 11 3 dc, ch 1.
space 12 1 dc, 1 htc, 1 tc, ch 1.
space 13 5 tc, ch 1.
space 14 1 tc, 1 htc, 1 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1.
space 15 1 hdc, 2 sc.
To finish off insert hook into the stitch in the middle of space 1 on round 1 and slip stitch.
As you can see there are a lot of different stitches and not many repeats so while it's not difficult you need to keep referring back to the pattern and concentrate on where you are up to .
If you want your hearts to look flat it's best to stiffen them in some way. I pinned mine to some foam and sprayed them liberally with this stuff......
then I left them over night to dry completely .
But I simply chained about 30cm then attached a heart by stitching from to back, close to the top of the first "bump" at the top of a heart. Then I chained enough to reach the second bump and joined that, both times I used a slip stitch.
Then I counted how many chains till I attached my next heart and joined it in the same way. I continued till all 9 hearts were joined but you could make yours as long or short as you like. Just one heart hanging up somewhere you want to prettify looks great too :0)
Hope you have fun with this. Please let me know if anything is unclear.

Hello Jacquie! I just came back to tell you that I made one of your hearts yesterday and it's absolutely gorgeous! It was easy to do, though I needed my eyes constantly on your well-explained pattern! I've also used the Stylecraft yarns which I love and now I want to make another heart! I need to pin and dampen and block this one! This is a perfect day for crochet as it's raining and I'll be looking at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations on TV at the same time! Thank you once again for sharing this lovely pattern!
ReplyDeleteHave a happy Sunday. Sandra
Thanks for letting my know how you got on Sandra. I'm so happy it worked out ok.
DeleteJust to say blocking only works on natural fabrics...something I didn't realize for ages...so you will need to use spray starch to get it to stay flat for ant length of time.
Jacquie x
a ????....so if the yarn is not a natural fiber, no blocking is necessary? if so, then would a garment made with non natural fiber hold it's shape after washing?
DeleteThese are so pretty - thanks for sharing the pattern with us. Lily. xxx
ReplyDeleteThese are lovely, I need to pick up my hook again...must get some nice bright colours like yours xxxxx

ReplyDeleteJust copied out the pattern into my new notebook that's only for crochet patterns. I'm thinking of using these to make a scarf for my mum for christmas and using some more to maybe join together in a circle to make a table mat. :)
ReplyDeleteI'gonna make a bunch of these and sew them together as scarves for Christmas. I might also try sewing some together to make a flower-shaped table mat. Ooooh I need to go buy yarn right now!
ReplyDeleteHi, Just wanted to let you know that I will be linking to this from my blog later today.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Carla
Hiya,
ReplyDeletere Allesandra's comment, what is a htc please? I have checked british-american conversions and i can't find it......please help, my daughter has fallen in love with this heart!! (she's a teenager and if she likes something it's a bloomin' miracle larf).
Regards,
Sue
Hi Sue, HTC is american half treble crochet....that's
Deleteyarn over twice,insert hook, draw up a loop (4 loops on hook)
Yarn over and draw through 2 loops ( 3 loops on hook )
Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops.
It's taller that a dc and not as tall as tc ...think I will do a post about it .
Jacquie x
I am off to have a go......teehee, have just practised in the middle of my stripey hot water bottle (htr) I am making, and it looks right, fank you! A post would be fab (I think because lots of people have learned to crochet using youtube and tinternet that is why the us terms are taking over the world!). Incidentally I saw a blog from a "british mum's kitchen" that used in her recipe 'cups', 'all-purpose flour and 'confectioner's sugar' what the bl**din' hell is happenin'!!
DeleteSue
PS - sorry I nearly frothed there, it's been a loooong day.
Really wonderful!! I love this pattern. Just made 5 hearts (pics on my blog) and will soon make more. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLOVE, LOVE, LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI am from sweden and I think that your hearts are lovely! I have just a wonder: could you describe how to make a half treble crochet (htc) I understand that there is a slightly difference between british crochet-terms and american and I can`t find htc in any american wordlists...
Thankful for all help you can give, because I just love those hearts of yours :-)
She posted about that stitch earlier, instead of doing a full treble crochet, you will have 4loops on your hook, you yarn over once and draw it through 2 loops, 3 loops on hook now, yarnover and instead of drawing through 2 loops you do all 3.
DeleteHow cute!!! thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this, but went to the site for the circles and in Google Chrome, I can not see how to translate into English, can you help?
ReplyDeleteJacquie, thanks for this lovely pattern. I had at first some trouble translating it into Dutch, but the second heart I made turned out to be as lovely as yours!
ReplyDeleteLove this and have started my first - also had not heard of a HTC and could not find it's UK alternative on utube or vid jug so thanks for adding the instructions...can't wait to see my bunting up (in my work room - I making it for me me me!)
ReplyDeleteI spent a good hour searching the htc stitch too, thank you for explaining - really glad I didn't unravel the beginning now! :) Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGreat pattern..I would love to incorporate these hearts into a square so I could make them into a blanket for my daughter. Can you post if you have instructions? Thanks
ReplyDeletehey jacqui
ReplyDeletejust loved your blog.great pattern.I would love to make them asap.thank you so much for sharing the pattern.
any chance you can make a pattern to then make it Into a square? would make a cute blanket!
ReplyDeleteHello Jacqui, I was searching the web for crochet hearts and found your pattern. I was really taken with them. They are so pretty and easy to make!
ReplyDeleteI have looked on your blog, but can't see whether you have a policy regarding people making and selling items based on your designs. (Forgive me if it's there and I've just overlooked it.) After being made redundant twice in the past 5 years and rapidly approaching retirement age, I have dusted off my craft skills and I want to try selling a few items on Folksy and in a local craft shop. I would love to make some hearts in time for Valentines Day and these would be perfect.
Obviously, I don't want to infringe your copyright, but if you do allow people to sell things based on your designs, please can you tell me what you require in terms of acknowledgement or payment? Apologies for putting this in the comments, but Blogger doesn't seem to allow any kind of personal message.
Hi Margaret, thank you for your comment. I'm happy for you to sell items made from my patterns. Hope the venture goes well :0)

Thank you so much! That's brilliant. :)

ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this pattern, its by far the best crochet heart I have seen online. I have a question for you. I plan on using the heart in an afghan that I want to crochet for a wedding gift. however both times I have tried to fill in the sides to make it into a square shape it came out just awful! (I'm pretty new to crochet so I'm not 100% sure of the best way to do it) have you tried this yet and if not do you have any suggestions? Thanks again! -Heidi
Very, very cool! If I can figure out how to Pinterest this...I will, as I believe this needs to be shared! Just lovely!
ReplyDeleteLove these!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your pattern! It was fun and I love anything 'granny square' looking. Also your tip on using starch spray was awesome as I've been trying to figure out how to "block" and this saves time! THANKS!
ReplyDeleteTerrific pattern, thank you!! :). :)

ReplyDeleteI couldn't find the site that was supposed to show me how to make the circular granny thingy. When I clicked on HERE I was sent to a non English speaking site that had no circular granny thingys. Please help me! I really want to make those hearts for someone I care about but I am out of internet gigabytes so I can't keep checking your blog. Can I subscribe to your blog? My email address that I use the most is deb.christiansen(at)gmail.com. If you could email me the instructions for the round part I'd be eternally grateful! I found you on BellaCrochet's Facebook page. I'm so glad I went there. You're a real jewel!
ReplyDeleteHi Deb, thank you for your comment. I've updated the link so it will take you to the right place again....thanks for letting me know.
