Hello Lovelies,
just look at these wonderful cottage garden flowers that I photographed last June. Aren't they just stunning.
They were in my lovely Mum in Laws back garden .
Ooooh Lupins and Foxgloves , wonderful.
The reason I searched through my stored images this week was because I had started a sketch of this view, across the same garden .....
Not quite so lush and pretty. It actually wasn't as dark as my camera makes it look in this photo and I liked the roofs and chimneys just visible over her neighbours hedge.
This is the sketch I did sitting in the warmth of Mum in Laws lounge, looking out across the garden, fences and hedges.
You can see I've copied the roof line as well as I could but my imagination was already thinking of things I often see here, that I could add to the view for more interest and colour.......
When I started to do a neater drawing in my large sketchbook the ideas evolved , so though the fixed structures remain the same , the picture has even more going on...including people..........
as usual I've gone over the drawing with a fine pen before colouring as I like this effect . I got out a ruler to do the washing line and the clothes prop as I didn't trust myself to be able to draw such straight lines free hand :0)
When I start to colour in I like to work my way down the page as I've learn't that it avoids the bit you have already done getting smudged. And to avoid getting grease from my hands onto the bottom of the page I try and remember to cover that part with some plain paper........
This was the first of about five colours I used on the roof, building up the shading gradually until I was happy with the effect.
And here is the finished drawing............
Ta- dah........
You can click on the picture to see it more clearly
I really love all the colour in this one, it's so happy and summery.
The people in this image are my Mum in Law, with her back to us, talking to her neighbour over the garden fence, as she often does..........
Rascal, her fluffy cat is asleep on the wheely bin
There is a deckchair, ready for a little sit down among the flowers.
Here's a photo of Snowflake, these cats are about Eighteen years old now but still quite lively.....I really love how the roofs and chimney pots turned out ............
Mum in Laws garden is such a pretty spot that I think there may be more drawings of different parts to come in the future...........
Thank you for all your super kind comments....I know I've said this before, but I really am touched that so many of you take the time to encourage me in this drawing adventure.

ohhh... those lupins, they remember me at my fathers garden:) lovely
ReplyDeleteThat's just brilliant! Love this drawing!!
ReplyDeleteEsther.
Super picture, I bet your Mum in Law loves it!
ReplyDeleteYou clearly have a natural gift. I've loved ALL your drawings, and always look forward to the next. You're super creative :)
ReplyDeleteI love those flowers! They are so English country garden. You've created and brought to life a happy little scene in that picture. x

I hope you are framing some of your drawings and proudly displaying them. Your work is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou've really captured the essence of a breezy summers day, I can almost smell the flowers and hear the washing snapping in the wind!
ReplyDeleteI nearly missed Tom Tit, perched on the top of the tree - but I should have guessed he wouldn't be IN the garden, with those cheeky cats waiting!
Brilliant!

Again another lovely story picture! I do enjoy gazing around to see 'what else' and 'what else!' Thankyou again for sharing, Mrs A
ReplyDeleteWhat a happy happy drawing! I love your style!
ReplyDeleteI like the transformation between the initial outlines and the finished piece (how cats changed places for instance ;-)).
ReplyDeleteI am sorry if I pay more attention to details, but I must say that the towel, the night gown and the fence are wonderfully drawn. The shades and shapes make them look so natural.
Love your pictures.
love the chimneys and the little apron!!!

Another great picture
ReplyDeleteThere is something special about your drawings....they always comfort me somehow, I can't explain it really. I think they remind me of children's book illustrations from my childhood, maybe the original Topsy and Tim books? Whatever it is, I love them!! Another beautiful and peaceful picture, so lovely! xx
ReplyDeleteJacquie, I LOVE this one very, very much!! And I think it´s interesting when you post some drawing tips as you´ve done this time. What about a post (like a tutorial) about it, as you do with your crochet?! I´d love it! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this picture, the flowers look beautiful but my favourite bit is the fence (I'm not being funny or anything) it looks so realistic - you've got it spot on! Anyway I always love washing drying on the line, either really or in pictures, it gives me a sense of comfort and being 'looked after' Sam xxx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! Perhaps there's a children's book in your future...
ReplyDeleteReally love this one. Especially liking the washing line. I think I've got a bit of a 'thing' about washing lines at the moment. Maybe because mine is satisfying me so much at the moment after months of drying inside! Love the little tips you give us each time. You're still inspiring me to have a go at drawing myself. I just need to find some time! Fiona x
ReplyDeleteHey Jacquie, you're really building up quite a portfolio of drawings........this is lovely.
ReplyDeleteLove Lupins and Foxgloves, your MIL's garden must be a picture in Summer.
Love all the details, washing on the line...owly cushion...Rascal asleep on the wheely bin......gorgeous.
I wonder if you would be able to put together a mosaic of all your drawings, just so we could
view them all in one place?

Hello Jacquie your drawing is beautiful and your attention to detail is so amazing. I love Lupins and Foxgloves.

I just want to sink into that picture....it's lovely! I did a little bit of drawing on Sunday with Little Bea, she was really encouraging bless her, mine wasn't very good but we both really enjoyed ourselves....so relaxing! :) x
ReplyDeleteYour posts are so enjoyable for me to read. You must pursue publishing your drawings. They would be so lovely on note cards, calendars, and print copies. I would be lined up to purchase them. Thank you again, for showing us the steps you take in completing a colored pencil drawing...
ReplyDeleteYou are so talented to work from your imagination.
ReplyDeleteI love to draw and colour in but have to have the "physical" image in front of me, beit a picture or the real thing to do it, but your extra imaginary pictures are perfect, love it.
I think your drawings are wonderful. You should do illustrations for books.
ReplyDeleteI just love your drawing. And the cats in it are so lovely.
ReplyDeleteLiefs, Melanie
The cottage garden flowers are beautiful. Your art is wonderful I love the movement in your pictures and you certainly have your own original style. Snowflake is lovely looking great for 18 x
ReplyDeleteI love the depth of the chimney pots and the fact that you are not afraid to have a go at people, which make your drawings really welcoming and give them a snapshot feel. The fence has a good 3d shape to it too. Great stuff. I have been venturing into new things too see here...

I've loved following you on your new artistic path! Your drawings are expressive, with lovely clear colors, and sweet details. And because your pictures are so beautiful may I suggest drawing ink that is more durable than a Frixion pen? Frixion pens use gel ink which isn't the most light or water resistant. Koh-I-Noor makes wonderful technical pens with a variety of nib widths and a great water resistant Indian ink. The reason I suggest a water resistant ink is because you may want to branch out to watercolor pencils or even mix brush watercolor with your color pencils. Mixed media is a fun way to go.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great advice Lucy

I really look forward to your drawings. Glad you post so often.
ReplyDeleteI'm in awe with this one. Such a typical scene of everyday life... the laundry hanging out, the hand petting the cat. Love all of it, especially the tea towels blowing on the washing line. Amazing stuff.
I wish I had each one of your drawings in a book with little stories accompanying each page. Makes this old 65 year old really happy.
Diana (Brit living in Canada). It's a real treat to see these good ole English scenes. Keep up the good work Jacqui. Love them.
Your drawings are always wonderful, and I think this is the best one. What are the wire things on the chimneys?
ReplyDeleteOops! I forgot to add that the basket weave fence is fantastic.
ReplyDeletegetting better and better! Love the little story that goes with each picture too. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Your drawing has come on in the short time you have been doing it. It really shows that practice makes perfect. I'm almost inspired to have a go myself, but I REALLY can't draw. Well done x
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Jacquie! This illustration reminds me of one of Alice's favourite baby books called "Peepo" written and illustrated by Janet and Alan Ahlberg. Have a look inside the book on Amazon, such gorgeous illustrations xxx Penny
ReplyDeleteWow, absolutely amazing. You should write a children's book, your pictures are lovely. New follower.

Another wonderful sketch Jacquie. Love those flowers.
ReplyDeleteAnne xx
I really like this Jacquie. I've said it each time but they just keep getting better. I can almost see the clothes blowing in the wind and it made me happy to look at it. Your drawings are soothing and easy on the eye. I love the blended colors.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Sharon
Lovely lovely drawing with lively, vibrant colours. Look forward to see more and more of your beautiful talent. Each time a new concept, its really mind blowing!!
ReplyDeleteSo agree with everyone else - this is very good indeed. Thank you for allowing us to share this journey with you xx
ReplyDeleteWow! really had to scroll down to get at the comments box! I adore lupins and foxgloves and love that first shot!
ReplyDeleteI love your new enthusiasm for drawing and colouring those colourful and well-composed pictures and your latest one is so friendly - giving us a taste of simple, everyday life and the washing blowing on the line - I feel the whole happy atmosphere through your portrayal. Well done! Have a happy weekend.
Hi There, As always, beautiful work!! Such a lovely happy domestic picture!!!! Love Snowflake!!!

You are inspiring me to draw but I don't know where to start and don't think i'll be very good. How do you get the ball rolling?
ReplyDeleteHi Jacquie - I love the way the washing looks like it is moving. That must have been difficuly to achieve. How many different coloured pencils do you use? The tin of pencils looks quite small and I am impressed that you can get such variety in shading from so small a starting point. xxx
ReplyDeleteAnother STUNNING drawing Jacquie! I feel like I've just stepped straight into summer - my heart is already there :o). I love foxgloves and lupins, you have captured them beautifully.
ReplyDeleteYour drawings are lovely and fresh. They would be so nice made into prints. Or small cards. :)
ReplyDelete~ Paula
I'll echo this they'd make great lithographies

Always love your drawings Jacquie and this one is wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteYour ma in law would be very happy too ☺
That is such a lovely drawing and I'm sure that if you framed it, your MIL would be tickled pink to have it.
ReplyDeleteI love that just about everything you do has a cat or more in it! :)
I can't wait for your posts to see any drawings you have done...really really enjoying them!
ReplyDeleteThat's really good! Well done :-)
ReplyDeleteGosh! that is really good! Clean, fresh look to it and you have an eye for detail.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried drawing using Indian ink or charcol? Charcol on parchment gives a very subtle effect... if you haven't tried it I've a feeling it will suit your style. ..... Just a thought!
I used to draw(many light years ago) freehand... I could draw what I could see but I couldn't do anything decent from my own imagination. What I do know is the more you draw the better you get.
looking forward to seeing more
keep well
Amanda :-)
Hello Jacquie,
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying your blog since I stumbled across it a few weeks ago. I just love your drawings...makes me wish I had just a little bit of artsiness so I could draw. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful artwork...oh, and adore your needlework too.
Warm regards from Canada :)
So lovely...especailly the owl cushion, a very nice touch.
