Wonderful World

Hello Lovelies,
the weather has been beautiful over the weekend and everywhere looks so pretty.
Our neighbours Magnolia tree looked  lovely in the evening sunlight yesterday.

and just this morning, when I went out for a run, I had to take my camera as I knew I would see things I wanted to photograph , like this wonderful blossom........

I was jogging along when I saw another gorgeous tree  so I crossed the road to get a picture........

I didn't see the older  gentleman walking his dog as played about getting a better angle.... and obstructing the pavement ...."ooops sorry" I said, a bit flustered....."I bet you don't see that many runners stopping to take pictures of flowers" were my next words.
I don't know what I expected him to reply to that but to my delight he said  "No but I would be  if I had remembered my camera"....."Yes, yes"... I agreed..... "It's so beautiful at the moment, there are wonderful pictures everywhere" . " Yes indeed" said the man "even the dandelions look lovely".

Awww, it was just a simple little conversation but it really touched me. It's great to know I'm not the only one who is literally full of the joys of spring...........

Now I wondered if I could ask you lovelies for some advice......
I have so many pictures stored on my computer and worry what would happen if it broke down. Do you know what is the best thing to do to ensure they are not all lost if this happens.
Thank you for all your comments and advice.
Jacquie x

  1. yes... buy an external hard drive and store them and all your data on it, then you can always be sure it will all be there for you!

    1. Yes, definitely back up everything on an external hard drive!

    2. That was what I was going to suggest. It's the best way to keep them safe.

  2. I agree - an external hard drive is the best option - so long as you remember to back up regularly! I don't know if a PC has the same option as a Mac - but Macs have an app called "Time Machine" which automatically backs up your computer, whilst the hard drive is plugged in It doesn't need you to select files, or choose how often, it just does it! :)

  3. I store my photos in folders on the computer hard drive and then once a year (ish) I burn them onto CD's. One for each daughter and one of holidays. I can then reload them if I need to. It is cheap, quick and easy to do. I always have a quick sort through and burn the ones I really like and delete the others. As a side, I make them into CD scrapbooks for the girls to store the CD's in little pouches.. but that is just me! Jo x

    1. I used to do the same till one day up popped a message that the format was obsolete and would not load the images I'd saved on the cd... so I'd be wary of storing it on a cd, because this could happen. I'm not sure why it happened just putting in my 2bobs worth!(hence the conversion to an external hard drive.

    2. Oops mine are on cd,although I have printed off enough to fill several albums. The oldies in my family like to see a "real" photo.

  4. There are lots of on line programs that allow you to store your data on them and you access them by a web address rather than taking up space on your computer or an external hard drive. i cloud is one of them but I am sure there are many others. Perhaps other followers will be able to give you some more options when they read this comment.

  5. Yes, a separate hard drive, maybe online storage. I also have booklet printed each year with the most important pictures in it, so if everything breaks down I would still have pictures to remember each year with.

  6. Hi.. As JaBCreations has rightly mentioned, there are many online freeprograms that allow you to store pics and videos. I use dropbox.com. The advantage is you will be able to access your data from anywhere in the world. You can also set your privacy settings. And I must say. You have wonderful pics. I enjoy your pics. Be it nature, be it crochet. They are amazing.

  7. I love chatting to passers by when out on a photo-shoot. It's usually the others who are intrigued and start up a conversation.

I transfer my photos to an external hard-drive about every 2 months. Though nothing is fool-proof it seems.

I love your photos, especially the apple blossom!

  10. Echoing the external hard drive, advice! Do it ASAP, as my hubby always says, it's not "if" my hard drive dies, it's "when"!!

  11. Oh Jacquie, How I enjoyed your photos today, and the tale of your chat. Sometimes the simplest conversations with strangers can really stick in your mind.

I'd love to say I'm super organised and back up all my photos etc, but I'm Terrible! I've got an external hard drive and try and back up when I remember, but it's not very often. I'd say that would be your best bet, you can get some fairly small ones now with massive storage for not too much money.

  12. My dear Husband had the brilliant idea of putting them onto my brand new ipad- all 3000 of them!!! Now how do I get them off, or up into the icloud from there?

PS I have this wonderful image in my head of the icloud raining everybody's photos down onto the world...

  15. This is such a magical time of year. Those blossoms are lovely. I tend to haul my camera everywhere too because if I don't I'm sure to see something I want to photograph. Kudos to the dog-walking gentleman for enjoying the cheerfulness of dandelions. I am in complete agreement!

Thanks for asking the photo-storage question - the answers have been most helpful. :)

  16. I often wonder what my neighbour thinks of me taking photographs of my veg garden each day. He tends to smile to himself & shakes his head. What a lovely man you met out.

  17. Flickr is a good place to store them. You can choose whether everyone can see them or just family and friends. I store all mine there now.

  18. Hi Jacquie,
if you have a really good internet connection you can create a free account with Dropbox which will automatically upload your pictures once configured after the first time (very easy to do). As long as you have less than 2GB of pictures it'll be free. If you have more you can pay for more space...which is cheap. The advantage of this is that Dropbox will back up the pictures and you would be able to access them from any computer, tablet or smartphone using your dropbox account. Google (Googledrive), Microsoft Skydrive also offer this service. Hope this helps. X

  20. I use an externalhard drive as well. The easiest way.

Gosh, your neighbour's magnolia is so beautiful and with such an abundance of flowers!!! We have a small magnolia in our garden. It only grows 2 or 3 flowers each year. Silly bugger. (I think our soil is too wet for it but then again we have about a hundred willows, they are doing really well)

At this moment I'm giving a birthday giveway at my blog:

  21. Hi Jacquie - your blossoms are just perfect - thank you sooooooo much for sharing them, you've lifted me right up! Such a nice man you met - I always think, in similar circumstances, 'The stranger you 'entertain' could be an angel in disguise'!
I would advise you to 'back up' Jacquie, then you have everything saved in case of a mishap: an external drive, if you have a Mac, just plugs in and does its stuff! When I recently upgraded my Mac I just needed to plug in the little box and everything from the old was on the new. Easy peasy!
All the best with it! Joy x

  22. Beautiful photos and lovely blue skies :-) And although I'm a bit of an ignoramus on the IT front, I do shift photos periodically onto an external hard drive, partly to free up space on the laptop. Only I really wish I was a bit more organised about filing them, I know exactly what I mean when i save them but can I remember later???! Have spent ages this evening searching for photos that I just know are here somewhere!! x

  26. Gorgeous blossom and blue sky photos.

We have an external hard drive and every month or so back up everything on that. xx

  27. We subscribe to Crashplan, it's about £7 a month. You select which folders you want it to back up and it backs them up constantly. For eg, my folders "2011" "2012" and "2013" automatically back up but not anything else as anything else on my PC is not stuff that I worry about losing. It's a type of cloud storage which means it it stored online. We also back up to external harddrive but I like having both. I really recommend Crashplan, Andy sorted it all out for me and I'm sure he wouldn't mind giving you a hand via email or something if you need it x

  28. I've been doing the same, taking spring pictures......it's wonderful to see some actual colour! We used to have a magnolia in our old front garden, when we moved the new people chopped it down - I was so upset, because it was seriously the best one I've ever seen! Really old too!
Anyways......yes, I have all my pictures stored on an external hard drive, it's almost half full now, so I shall be investing in a newbie soon. You can pick them up really cheap nowadays...a 1TB one is the way to go :) Hope that helps....
