today's a ta-dah day...my favourite:0)
I've just finished my second giant granny of 2011 and I'm pretty thrilled with the result. It's quite different to my first one . The colour choices I made were more subdued this time. I was hoping for a "vintage" look and I think I've achieved it....
I suppose it's my interpretation of vintage anyway :0)
There is no bright yellow or orange or pink in this blanket. Instead I've chosen grey and camel and brown to contrast with the safer blues, pinks and greens. The brightest colour is a rich red which I think lifts the look.......
Most of the colours are stylecraft special double knitting .
For those of you who are interested the stylecraft colours I used are.........
pale rose and meadow (small balls on top)
cloud blue, camel, apricot, aster, soft peach (middle row L-R)
cream, raspberry,?lavender, grape, lemon and teal (bottom row L-R)
The other stylecraft colour I used was lipstick ( rich red )
As I wanted to include some rusty orange /brown and grey I used these from my stash. Sorry unknown origin but stylecraft do have similar colours .........
That's 18 colours in total
I wonder if anyone noticed my blanket now has a different border to this post . I wasn't happy with the pink picot edging so I pulled it back and went with my trusty double V edging in cream ( tutorial in my side bar)
This blanket is 56 rounds plus a border and weighs 800 grams. Which means it took 8 100 gram balls of yarn in total . At £1.50 a ball that's a bargain £12 for all this granny gorgeousness.
I started this blanket on the first of September so you can see it's quite a quick blanket to produce. I'm sure I could have completed it quicker if I hadn't been so busy. As I've said before granny squares are great projects to do when you don't feel like concentrating too much . They are so relaxing. Another bonus is the relatively small number of ends to sew in. Two for each row means 114 for the whole blanket...only takes an hour or so :0)
It measures 48 inches square and is ideal to use as a lap blanket. I love the soft drapeness of this pattern and the stylecraft yarn.
Though the colours are worked in a random order you might have noticed I've sometimes grouped darker or lighter colours and other times I've alternated light and darker shades. This was intentional as I prefer this effect. I've also used the cream yarn quite a few times to add contrast and tie the "design" together. .....
I'm loving having this blanket draped over the back of a chair...just waiting to be snuggled under this winter :0)
I'm still having trouble commenting . I've noticed some of you lovelies are having the same problem....lets hope they sort it out soon.
Hope your week has got off to a good start.

A stunner Jacqui! i love the vintage tones, perfect for these cooler autumnal evenings, a siper finish, well done
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I love granny squares big and small. I even managed to quit smoking by granny squaring. And I think your colour choices work really well. Just found your blog and you already inspired me to start making mini hexagons. Not sure what will become of them. Thank you for the tutorials and hope you have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteIt's really stunning, I love the choice of colours too! I have put off making a granny square blanket and I have loads of WIP's on the go but I really want to make one of those. Good to hear about the stylecraft too that's a great price.
ReplyDeleteKandi x
Love it Jacquie! I love how you use your colours to get the right effect. Very clever. x
ReplyDeleteI love your rug. It reminds me of one I made. I started it when I was 8 and finished it when I was 28!! I had lots of short lengths of yarn left from the rounds and ended up adding a row of granny squares with a red border. I still use it each winter.
ReplyDeleteI haven't commented on your blog before, although I love visiting, but thought I might be able to help with your comments problem. I had the same trouble and a friend told that when you sign into Google, make sure you DO NOT TICK the "Stay Signed In" box. I've had no trouble since. Others have found that by using Crome instead ot Internet Explorer has also worked. Good luck with it.
Hi Jacquie! Your "Vintage Granny Blanket" is beautiful but so is all the things you make! :) I have a question though and I hope you can help. There are different types of granny square patterns and I've made quiet a few, but when making them...as they get bigger I start noticing a kind of a diagonal look taking shape almost an optical illusion feel to it, like towards the center so then I stop b/c I don't like the look. So I've never made a granny square blanket b/c of that! I don't know if its the color scheme I'm using, the yarn, or the pattern. Your blankets don't have that look and that's what draws me to your blog!!! So what could it be? The pattern? Do you use a chain one space between the clusters? Please help!!! :) Thanks Lika G.
ReplyDeleteIt's really lovely, very subtle, gentle colours, just right for a restful evening.
ReplyDeleteWow, it's fab, and you've finished it so quickly! I started mine months ago and I'm only on round 36 (I think!). I never seem to have time to pick it up in between all the other stuff I've got going on!
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous. I love the colours you have used. I noticed a previous commenter complimenting you on how square you manage to get your blankets, I've noticed this too. It looks really good and is perfect for this time of year.
ReplyDeleteI love Stylecraft too! I thought I was the only one. Your blanket is great, makes me want to really make an effort to learn crochet.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous blanket!
ReplyDeleteOh Jacquie, it's so beautiful! Gorgeous palette, yes, it does look very vintage-y. Jeepers, I want to start one of these lovelies now. And you're saying this Stylecraft yarn is only one-fifty a skein? That's it, I'm moving to England. ;)

It's beautiful! I love the vintage feel, you've certainly achieved just the right look as far as I'm concerned. I've never wanted to make one of these blankets as I don't like the idea of each round getting longer and longer, but you're making me seriously consider it!
