A January Drawing

Hello Lovelies.
the idea for my latest drawing started with some indoor bulbs.....Hyacinths to be exact.
I'm sure many of you know of the pleasure these little pots of Spring bring me at this time of year.

My own Hyacinths sit on my kitchen windowsill, so I decided to work with this . In my initial sketch you can just about make out a rather large bowl of them.............

I made up a more interesting view than the one I actually have.

This is my final drawing, outlined with a fine pen before colouring. The bowl of Hyacinths has shrunk as they did seem massive in my sketch.

This is an imagination drawing. None of this actually exists except in my minds eye. It's a fun creative process adding details as they pop into my head.

The colouring can be a bit tricky, with no reference there are so many decisions I have to make as the drawing progresses. All the colours and where the shading should go need to be chosen as I go along. It's a slow process and this drawing was worked on over several days.

I went with red gingham curtains in the end..........

then I had an idea to copy the sky in my favourite Christmas card. I just love the night sky with some remaining daylight on the horizon. I added the moon by drawing round a button to get a perfect circle ..........

I included some pink in my sky as I love to see this phenomenon..........

My initial idea was to do a square drawing of just the windowsill and the wintry view through  the window, like this...........

But , having a rectangular page, I decided to add some more indoor detail below the window.........

A cosy chair to sit with your favourite pet and work with some soft yarn in the glow of a lamp is my idea of a perfect January day.

Of course I also need to get outdoors for a while, to  fill my lungs with fresh air and clear my head. In my drawing I've included a lady walking her dog......

So here is my finished January drawing. I'm sorry the photo of it isn't the best. It was a bit dark here by the time I had chance to take the pictures, but I couldn't wait to share it with you lovelies.

Ta-dah.......

You can click on any of the pictures to see them larger in a light box.

I am super pleased with how it turned out . It's got many lovely things that make  winter more pleasant, like....

♥  feeding the birds
♥ getting wrapped up and having a walk in crunchy fresh snow
♥ coming home and  looking at a beautiful snowy scene from inside a warm house
♥ smelling the beautiful scent of Hyacinths
♥ enjoying a hot drink and a bit of cosy hooky time

This drawing makes me smile, I hope it makes you smile too.

  7. Lovely, it is your curtains that make it. They have the illusion of dividing the inside and the outside scene. A wonderful scene for all to admire. Jo x

I too remember watching Paint Along with Nancy, (Kominsky), I think. An American lady. She always started by dividing her canvas into a grid. Made it look easy.
I am just finishing a little crocheted pink bunny made from your pattern, thank you. Its so cute!

  25. Wow! That drawing just makes me happy looking at it - I can imagine the feelings of joy you must feel as you design and choose colours. You have such talent, but I also love the sense of carefree colouring in this picture, it's so inviting as well as being styled, do you know what I mean? Basically, I'm just wishing we could sit at my kitchen table and colour all morning... ;-) Chrissie x

  31. Your drawing is beautiful, I love the way you have managed to give the curtains 'movement'. Also so pleased to see little Tom Tit in the garden opposite!!! I agree with Tina, you should get them printed as cards. X

  37. When I saw your first sketch, the curtains looked bare, without any folds. Then when you started shading, I could see the fold on the curtains. I think that is brilliant, that you shaded the checks in way to emphasize the folds. Also I love the light the lamp throws around. Something like the works of 'painter of light'. Great work Jacquie. Your drawings give me great delight. Thanks for sharing.

  41. Oh, I like this a lot!! It seems like it would be in a storybook. I like the colors, sweet details, the indoor setting and the view outdoors. The indoors has all the cozy crafty things I love. Would be neat to see this for order as a card or print. I collected some single notecards from Catherine Holman folkart to send to friends and to just keep to look at. Alexine in Maryland
