Hello Lovelies,
Hope your weekend is going well. Our home is smelling wonderfully festive at the moment, due to the fact we have been making a Christmas cake. This is a new thing for us but inspired by Frugal Queen we have followed Delia's Recipe and I'm hopeful the resulting cake will be yummy. The aromas of citrus , cinnamon , nutmeg and brandy floating around here at the moment are divine.....I wish you could smell them.........
Anyway, I digress. This post is about a long held dream of mine to own a Welsh Dresser. I simply love them as I think they look so pretty . Do take a look at Kazzy's fabulous dresser in her blog header HERE, see what I mean ?
Additionally they are both a practical storage item and a wonderful display opportunity . I even have a spot I would like to put one in my dining room..........
Ummmm , I don't usually share this uninspiring corner with you lovelies because it is a cluttered mess. This picture was taken after I had moved my yarn stash and project bags. I've donated a lot of outgrown toys and clothes to charity so my yarn can squeeze in a cupbord upstairs. But I'm still left with this ageing Ikea shelf unit which does not hide any of the remaining necessary stuff.
I'd been keeping an eye out for a secondhand Welsh Dresser in the charity shops but without much luck ( and even from a charity shop , a nice one can cost about £90 around here).
Then last week Mr BM came home and told me his workmate was getting rid of a Pine Welsh Dresser and would I be interested ? "YES I AM" was my instant reply.
Happy day !! a Welsh Dresser had practically fallen in my lap and for only £30
Well I'm really hoping it will. Final delivery arrangements are still pending but somehow it will be mine .
And in the mean time I've been allowing myself to do some serious day dreaming. I've made a Flickr Gallery of my favourite dresser images HERE with added notes to myself about why I love them.
I'm so looking forward to finally getting this clutter out of sight and I can't wait to play around arranging some of the pretty things I already have on it's shelves. Christmas has come early for me .Of course I'll be sharing pictures with you all :0)
I'll leave you with a couple of Autumnal images........
Wonderful , and just painted by my talented Mum.

I really want a welsh dresser too! Although I have no idea where I would put one. I love the idea of them. x
ReplyDeleteThose paintings are wonderful.Does she sell them?Hope you get your dresser and we get some photos.
ReplyDeleteOur house is smelling festive too - we've the fruit soaking in juice & brandy overnight :)
ReplyDeleteHope you get your dresser soon - I am lucky - we've one built into the kitchen and one that was a pressie from MrVV 20 years ago which is in need of a paint :)
We recently acquired a dresser, as my parents-in-law moved house and then had nowhere in the new house that their dresser would fit. It is lovely to have somewhere to put my nice crockery and things, though I'll admit the cupboards at the bottom are full of toys and jigsaw puzzles.
ReplyDeleteOoooooo exciting! I would love a dresser... there have been some fab ones around but I don't think there is any room for one. Enjoy yourself x
ReplyDeleteHow exciting!! I too, have always pined after a welsh dresser! I may have physically hugged mine when I got it 3 months ago! It still makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, just looking at it (and I haven't even put any china on it yet......!)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see yours!! xx
Hello Jacquie
ReplyDeleteIf you convert your recently acquired Welsh dresser into anything like ANY of the pics you have posted on Flickr you'll going to have one fantastic bit of furniture in your house. Lucky Lucky you!!! Looking forward to seeing photos!
Your mother is seriously talented...what lovely paintings.
keep well
Amanda :-)
Oh Jacquie, I'm with you on the dresser. I have drawers full of beautiful china treasures that should be on show Instead of hidden away. I do have a lovely little dresser full of character but it has glass, sliding doors so everything is hidden. But it has several little spice drawers and so is really quite special. I must continue my search for an open fronted dresser, but it may be the thought of regular dusting and cobwebs which seem to multiply tenfold throughout Summer that puts me off a little!!
ReplyDeleteShall continue to keep an eye out though.
Your mum's paintings are wonderful, I love the second one in particular. The colours are so very Autumn indeed and both of them would've been snapped up in a heartbeat if they were in our recent art show.....
Enjoy your weekend, blue skies and sunshine here, divine.

Hello! Your Mum's paintings are fabulous, I love them. I hope your dresser arrives soon.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend.
Louise
Wonderful news Jacquie, good things always seem to come to those that wait :o) I am so very pleased for you and no doubt you will dress it in your beautiful style xox Penelope
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your win! And I do love your mother's artwork. They are lovely.
ReplyDeleteWonderful that your dream came true. You've got a terrific spot for it and I envy all your room, lol. I'm still trying to make more room by getting rid of things but as you know, when you are crafting, there is never enough storage.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's lovely. Here in the U.S., there is something similar called a "hutch," but I like the exposed shelves on top much better. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for one for our new (first!) house!
ReplyDeleteThose paintings look amazing.
ReplyDeleteI had a welsh dresser in the 80s, then got rid of it mid-nighties when I got all minimal! Big mistake! Anyhow, several years ago my friend was getting rid of a lovely glazed, cream cupboard and I jumped at the chance! I love my little cupboard!
ReplyDeleteI firmly believe the right bit of furniture finds it way to us, enjoy your bargain price dresser! :)
I don't usually make christmas cake, but this year I decided I want one and am planning on using the exact same recipe! I sounds quite easy. Do you 'feed' yours afterwards?
ReplyDeleteYour mother does beautiful paintings.
hello lovely!...such a lovely post and thank you for the link and message ;0)x
ReplyDeletei do hope one day to get my running shoes on!- you as my inspiration!.
i loved the link to all the dressers...when i was with my daughters father we lived in a cottage an old cider press. the cottage was actually done very modern inside but it was open planned down stairs and i loved the conservatory style big windows kitchen...my partner loved brown, beige, brown, beige, brown , beige...now to a lover of painted furniture and vintage treasures this was un-inspirational and i too kept a file of dream piccys!!!!...A dream of how i hoped it may look with a bit of kazzy love.
I started collecting bits and more bits and painting old bits of furniture. but i wasnt allowed to have it out on display. All my belongings and things i love to see out where tucked in boxes or behind doors. I felt like i was living in a show room, friends would come over and say things like 'i didnt think your home would look like this' and id explain it keeps my partner happy so i went along with it. When our relationship break down ( which must stress wasnt to do with furniture hehe) I lived back with my mother and only really had a room full of things, but when i finally found my home now I could express how i wanted to live and be quite selfish in its style, i know its not everyones style, but to me it feels like 'home'.
Also second hand seems seems 'so right' for recycling purposes and keeping costs down. And that happy, skippy heart flutters when you find those treasures in your charity shop. If you think about we have been doing this long before kirstie allsopp made it fashionable tehehe...looking forward to her vintage home series, think i missed one.
I want to try making christmas cake too...those art pieces are really special x
...top message on my blog is usually 'how do you dust everything?'...now im not someone who really worries over dust, being clean 'yes', but i must dust only when im changing the look of things around...and if i see a naughty cobweb or bits of dust i just get my baby wipes out (my perfect tool) x
DeleteI dreamed of having a dresser, then bought one locally for a mere £20. The boring practical side of me won over before I painted it, and I sold it. I just couldn't face removing everything every time it would need cleaning. They are beautiful, and if I had a cleaner I would have one.....X
ReplyDeleteWill you paint your dresser of leave it pine? I am struggling with just that dilemma at the moment. I have had my dresser for years and years and I left it pine but it's now looking tired and shabby and I really want to attack it with my Annie Sloan paint but I'm worried I will make a mess of it. I can't wait to see your pictures and I think your mum's paintings are just gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteKindest Regards Kay
Hi Kay , it's a dilemma for me too. I think I will live with the pine for a bit and see :0)

wow your mum is a great artist. I love having a welsh dresser. They are a brilliant storage space with the top bit for all your pretties! worth every penny!
ReplyDeleteOoh, Christmas cake, thanks for reminding me! I always use that Delia recipe too, must get the fruit soaking (in last dram of last year's damson brandy) so that 5yo daughter and I can make it after school tomorrow when big brother is out for tea. Looking forward to seeing your new dresser, sadly we don't have space for one here. C x
ReplyDeleteGreat news on the dresser, I look forward to seeing what you do with it. Those paintings are just fabulous, I love them! You mum is very talented. I'd love to have pieces like that on my walls.
ReplyDeleteHello ... oh my a welsh dresser, its one of my desires at the moment to, although its on hold as I just don't have the room at the moment (boo hoo hoo!!)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see yours and what you do with it, the pictures you have on flikr are amazing, and inspirational.
Thank you for sharing, and here is to the safe arrival of the dresser.
xx
I still absolutely love my dresser and miss it at present, we have half moved to a rented house whilst we try and sell ours....so the none essential stuff is an hour away. It was an extravagance, made from reclaimed wood, and I must say the last few years I've seen loads of cheapish (up to £50)perfectly acceptable dressers that with a lick of paint would be fantastic. Why do we all see things we are not looking for?!
ReplyDeleteAs for Delia's Christmas cake, I think I have just made number 25 or so, made one every year since leaving uni, my mum makes one every year still, and she made our wedding cakes with the same recipe 24 years ago! I always cook it on a chilly miserable day when I know we are in all day as the warmth and smell are almost as good as the eating in a few weeks time!
Fiona
Oh Jacquie! You are not alone in your wanties for a Welsh dresser. Me and The Bert are dying to get one for our house. It is definitely a thing that this house needs - when we stripped off all the layers of paper in the lounge, you could make out where one had been against the wall and painted around. And the people we bought the house from had one too.
ReplyDeleteIt is only right that we bring a dresser back into this house! Problem is, I've got a firm idea of what I'd like, and we haven't seen anything like it, certainly not anything affordable... we'll keep looking. I liked the idea in one of the comments above of furniture finding you - if you're listening beautiful farmhouse Welsh dresser, I'M RIGHT HERE!
I hope all works out with yours, will look forward to pics.

ReplyDeleteYour mother's landscape paintings show she has a real talent for this subject matter - they are lively and fresh - Beautiful!
