These gorgeous Oriental Poppies have lived at this address longer that us. Every year I'm so happy to see the leaves and then buds appear. These are not delicate little things , they are about the size of a walnut.....
I look for signs of them opening.......
Then they begin to split.............
Soon the casings fall away to reveal a wonderful sight......
Huge ( about 6 inches across ), bright orangey red flowers with stunning black centres .........
I just love them........

Jacque, I'm so glad you shared the poppy photos! My grandmother had poppies (same color as yours) in her garden. Seeing these beautiful poppies brought back tender memories of her, thank-you!
ReplyDeleteOh my word, they are amazing! So exotic, I love it when you inherit plants that you haven't had to buy yourself!Thank you so much for the plants info, I looked up Weigela to find out more about it! I do have another one too but it's variegated with pale flowers.
ReplyDeleteI must remember to make sure all my plants are labelled!
Lovely to see the sun is still out!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!, how lovely to have them to look forward to each year. I love poppies but they won't grow in my garden the soil must be wrong for them I think :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful sight: the birth of the poppy! I love the second photo with the crinkled red petal tips just showing and then the vibrant, gorgeous fully-opened flowers with their amazing centres! Great captures!
ReplyDeleteWow they are stunning, I need colour like that in my garden here too! x

ReplyDeleteIt's so interesting in your blog!
You sent me some of these seeds didn't you? Well guess what, they have grown! They are about to open any day now. A little part of Bunny Mummy world in my garden.
ReplyDeleteThe pink ones I sent you are just tiny seedlings at the moment so be careful what you take out as they might not be weeds but poppies.
I'll keep you posted!

ReplyDeleteI love the delicate nature of Poppies and these are just gorgeous Jacquie.......

Poppies are my favourite flower, I love their papery nature, and the shape of the seed pod. We used to have chickens, who ate all of the leaves, and decimated our flowers, but hopefully this year, the flowers might stand a chance.
ReplyDeleteI live in a house called Poppy Cottage, it was called that before I moved here, so we should have lots of poppies really!
Love your pictures, Judith xx
I planted some giant poppies from seed last year, and nothing much happened. This year, I have 13 heads. Three have opened so far, and I have been stunned by their beauty (that and the fact that I even managed to grow them as I usually kill everything!) They are not like yours as I expected them to be, but they are all frilly. Very big and very frilly. I am bowled over. Poppies are really rather stunning!
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful day!

Beautiful flowers aren't they. And great pics.
ReplyDeleteI managed to snap a bee on some of these the other day, I must get around to seeing if the shots I got were any good!
What a lovely sight to brighten this rainy day we're having here.
ReplyDeletePoppies are up there high on my list of fav flowers. Many years ago I designed my own business card/letter head and I had a red poppy as a focal point. Stunning photo's and look at the sun shining on them :) We had sun today and a pleasant 17 deg. Apparently we are going to have a mild winter this year.....now that is something that makes me happy.
