Drawing on inspiration

Hello Lovelies,
some of you may already know that my Mum is a talented artist, as I sometimes share her work here. For as long as I can remember she has sketched and painted at every available opportunity. It's been a life long passion and I can't imagine the day she looses interest ever arriving.
My own home is full of her beautiful pictures. Mostly watercolours , but also vibrant Acrylics and a clever collage. She paints for pleasure and last week brought a picture to show me , based on a photo in THIS blog post........

Awwwwww, my old red tractor. I loved her version of this photo I took........

Now I'm NO artist myself , art was never a strong subject of mine when I was at school and I've only very rarely tried to draw anything since then  , but I suddenly felt inspired to try capturing this image myself.
I'm sure the beautiful artwork in my magazine was also an inspiration. I've also been enjoying THIS wonderful artists blog lately

I knew I wouldn't be able to do any thing accomplished , but never the less I fancied giving it a go.
These are my eldest's watercolour pencils, bought by Mum, aren't they lovely.......

I sketched out the tractor , and then decided to add more details from my walk......so the picture was not an accurate image I saw on that magical snowy day, but more the best bits and the feeling all rolled into one. If you know what I mean.
I'm waffling a bit now aren't I. I hope you are not expecting anything astounding. I'm a bit nervous to share this ....but here goes.........

Ta-dah........

What can I say.........only it was such fun to do and for a non painter/ drawer I think it turned out pretty well...

I can see it has many faults but I love that it reminds me of that day and I was able to include things.....like the birds hopping about on the hay bales that I could not capture with my camera. I'm really pleased with how these two cuties turned out actually.....they are tiny on the picture so were tricky to do........

Drawing also gave me the opportunity to change the white sky for something prettier and make the lovely rolling hills we have around here appear more how they do to the naked eye (rather than all flattened out as the camera makes them)........

I've included the footprints in the snow that showed me which way the path went and all the colour in the bare hedge that doesn't really come across in a photograph either......

I think it's very much a starting point, and I was almost holding my breath every time I added a detail, not knowing how it would work out. But I know I loved doing it and that's the most important thing to me really.

  1. Hi, Jacquie!
Your drawing turned out beautiful and picturesque. Of course, the best part is that you enjoyed the process. Who knows may be drawing will become your another hobby.
    Have a nice day!

    1. Yes, sorry! I got distracted and didn't post that I liked your mother's painting very much. She has a nice style, seems like it was no effort at all for her to make this picture.:) yea, now my comment is complete, I hope :)

  3. Your drawing is lovely - well done you for giving it a go! It's fascinating the way the camera changes things subtly and the fact that in a drawing you can add little touches that tweak the scene to evoke the atmosphere more powerfully. I know with modern photo editing you can play away with changing the look of a photo but it still isn't quite the same as a drawing. Of your two versions, your photo has more of a still quality to it and the drawing has much more life in it. Fascinating! Your Mum's watercolour is beautiful too. E x

  4. Your mother's water-colour is lovely, I can just imagine it framed and hanging on the wall.... so tranquil and relaxing to look at. And how lovely to have a picture of a scene that means something to you - many years ago a friend's mother painted me a picture of a local beauty spot, then when we moved away she painted a surprise collage of several local scenes including our house and the church where we married! Both water-colours still have pride of place in my lounge!
And well done to you for having a go yourself, I love all the detail you have added to your picture, you should be proud!

  6. I too would love to draw and I so admire your bravery! Both yours and your Mum's pictures are beautiful and both deserve admiration. I totally agree with your point about the hills and how the camera flattens them... there are so many beautiful walks around where we live (on the Cornish Moors) that just don't seem to come across in the same way in a photograph as they do on an artists easel! I encourage you to keep exploring this talent... who knows where it may lead you to?

  10. Your mum's art is beautiful. However, how stifling is it to creativity when people make judgements? The first critical judgement that kids get is about colouring in. Because it is non conformist, they learn that somehow they are wrong, instead of just being allowed to be themselves. It's bullying : the kid isn't hurting anyone. Let them be and they might come around to the idea of using more than one colour and who knows, might like to colour within the lines.
I love your little pictures. I can tell what they are and they represent what they stand for, which I would hazard was your intention.
Love your work Jacquie. Now, don't let anyone tell you you cannot draw. The difference is you don't draw like your mother, which is a good thing; there won't be fights as to who actually did it. Take care.

  17. I would be absolutely thrilled if I had drawn that, it's just so lovely, I like everything about it and love how you have been able to include all those little moments from the walk in one picture. Your mum's drawing is brilliant too :)

There's a petition linked from my latest posts you might be interested in, only a few hours left to sign it, it's an RSPB petition relating to EU funding.

  23. I'm SO glad you followed your inclination to have a go at drawing. Starting out is always scary, you don't want to make a mistake etc, but you have to start somewhere and it's only by experimenting and making mistake you learn. And I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that when you have a mother who is an artist. Thanks for being brave enough to show us your work. Keep going.

  26. you are both talented. i love the fact you took the beautiful photograph and your mother re-created it on paper and then she inspired you to do the same. I come from a family of artists~ we all have such different mediums we work in. I myself mainly in pen & ink, my twin is mainly into stitching, sewing, knitting, but also loves pastels and pencils, my father watercolours and acrylic and my mother charcoal...we all inspire eachother.
And i feel ive been less creative these last months...but i got out my watercolour pencils last night as ive been so inspired by Angie lewin's art and Mary Woodin lately...when i was younger, a child my mum hosted some get-to-gethers with the local village woman and they'd sit with tea in our large family garden drawing different parts of the garden...i would sneek up and watch them painting and drawing...i love the way we all have such different ways of painting the same subject area. I feel a bit rusty around the edges with pencils, but i like watercolour pencils cos you can go over after and blend colours and it flows better together.

keep at it as you do have a lovely talent x

    1. You lucky thing! I was not blessed with the hand and eye thing to interpret with any media. My father draws and paints and my youngest son has talent also.
I tell people I failed stick figures, so I admire art very much.
Whatever any talent anyone has, I say Don't stop! :)

  27. I two have a very talented mother painter.

For christmas as a surprise to my partner she painted our three dogs as one of them had pasted away last year so with the aid of photographs she painted the most beautiful picture of all three of our dogs together. Nothing normally "gets to" my wife but before she even unwrapped the painting she burst out crying as she was so touched mum had done her something so personal.

With regards your drawing I love the detail of the hay stacked on the trailer and the footprints. As you say enjoyment of painting is the main thing I think.

  29. What I love about your drawing Jacquie is that you just sat down and enjoyed the process of creating something, without too much thought about how right and wrong the end result would be. And that shows in your illustration - it captures so much of what you clearly love about winter and it is charming. You Mum's watercolour is also beautiful. I used to dabble with watercolours and occassionaly make a birthday card with mine but I'm not so good. I need more practice!

  31. Well done you ( and your Mum) Sometimes we just won't try something incase we can't suceed. But look...you did. I just love your picture (and your Mums)and love it all the more because you enjoyed it.
I have dabbled in the past with water colour but get shy! I have one picture (on my blog) of my dog which I love and jsut to have done that makes me very happy. In this day and age we need to find fullfilment outside of the daily grind. Maybe they should teach that at GCSE!!
